We ate soboro\u00a0<\/em>chicken last night \u2013\u00a0the closest thing to comfort food in my world and Japanese to the core. \u00a0Chicken and egg with flavorings of shoyu\u00a0and dashi and sesame oil, some mirin, garnished with a piece of nori<\/em>. \u00a0The added bonus is that it’s incredibly fast to make, so we were able to sit down to a family meal. \u00a0 John John has been really excelling at his use of the fork, so this may have been his first experience eating soboro<\/em> with one bite having\u00a0many flavors combined: chicken, egg, peas, seaweed.<\/p>\n

“I’m so glad John John can grow up in a \u00a0world that knows seaweed,” I sighed.<\/p>\n

And immediately realized how empty that sounded. \u00a0But seriously, growing up in Newhall, CA<\/a>, \u00a0I’ll always remember when ‘sushi’ was a disgusting\u00a0foreign dish with raw fish – if anyone knew what it was at all – and I was\u00a0teased for the rice balls with seaweed in my lunch box:\u00a0“Seaweed? Ewwww!! \u00a0Gross!!” \u00a0That’s when\u00a0I felt the need for lunchables, but back to this post.<\/p>\n

“Can I have hot sauce?” asked John. \u00a0I looked at him askance. \u00a0“Is that wrong?” he said. \u00a0I gave him some, because who is to say what is right and wrong with all of the mixing of flavors in the world. \u00a0If there can be Korean Tacos, John can eat hot sauce on soboro<\/em>. \u00a0“It’s good,” he attested. \u00a0I’m too set in my ways\u00a0when it comes to this comfort food, so passed on using the condiment as much as I do love it. \u00a0But John John pointed to the mostly empty dish of hot sauce. \u00a0“Mo,” he said, and signed “please.” \u00a0I put some on a piece of chicken and he ate it.<\/p>\n

“Yum,” he said. “Mo!”<\/p>\n

“Can you say, ‘please’?” I asked.<\/p>\n

“Pess,” he replied.<\/p>\n
